coined the term. Symbolic interactionism relies on the meanings that people attach to things and is unlike functionalism that relies on purportedly objective measures of things. Symbolic interactionism understands why

functionality in society. In such a sense, the two concepts which are somewhat at odds, become inextricable. More specifically, the theory emphasizes "interactions among people, use of symbols in
