a dividing line between the haves and the "have nots." In fact, in looking at society today, one sees a similar paradigm and while one cannot say that both strata
are heterogeneous, one can certainly say that there is a division. Clearly, the people of color are on the bottom of the hierarchal model. Marx and Engels said,
in The Communist Manifesto: "The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honored and looked up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer,
the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage-labourers"(1992, p.21). Thus, Marxs view is rather precise, expressing the problem by putting a price on everything. The doctor
no longer works for altruistic reasons and the lawyer too is corrupt by money. People in capitalist societies see this too. This all plays into notions of class. Essentially, Marx
saw the society as being defined by class and basically broke it down into two groups--the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. He saw much dispute between the two as one would
try to control the other. To him, communism would rectify the class problem. In terms of todays society, there is less of a distinction in terms of money, but there
is certainly a distinction when it comes to race and other class factors that are separate and apart from income for example. The society is divided along racial lines. This
was evidenced when the OJ verdict was read and gasps came from the white viewers, but cheers from the black audience. There is a host of other evidence that
the society is not assimilated and it is really not difficult to apply Marxs hierarchal model to that end. One can classify people as haves and "have nots" and that
