positive and negative. On the positive side, social roles allow people to view an individual in a certain way. Social roles can sometimes be attached to status. For example, lawyers
and doctors have certain roles in society that are coveted and they command respect. At the same time, the thing that is positive on some level can be negative on
other levels. For instance, the role of the child, or the person with a mental deficit, can be void of power. In some way, the nature of power in social
roles is attached to the particular role and this can be either a positive or negative aspect of social roles, dependent upon the prescribed role. Hence, one positive effect of
social roles is that they are empowering, but also, a negative effect is that they may be disempowering. A positive aspect of social roles is that they are not
permanent and are attached to a relative position. That is, someone may have the social role as a teacher but decide to pursue another vocation. A man who is a
father for example may decide that he wants to be a woman and so, some of the original role is lost. Roles can be changed by the individual who takes
on a role and this is a positive aspect of roles. There are effects or consequences attached to each of these roles, but they can be changed. Examples of effects
of roles are that society treats individuals in certain ways, but when roles are changed the effect likewise is altered. A negative effect of subscribing to social roles is that
an individual may be treated in a negative way due to a social role. Someone who is a healer for example but is not sanctioned by society is often treated
