Schaufeli, Janssen & Rozeman, 1998 ) define burnout as something akin to a state of exhaustion that is physical, mental and emotional, and is caused by "long-term involvement" in
situations which are taxing. The physical symptoms include fatigue and weakness and the emotional component is equated with feelings of helplessness (1998). One feels trapped in a situation and
the mental part of it is equated with a negative attitude toward self and work, as well as life in general (1998). Clearly, burnout is not something one
leaves behind at work, even if it is ones job that causes it. Because it affects people in the whole of their lives, it is something that one must give
attention. Many people in the helping professions are prone to burnout, likely due to the fact that they become emotionally involved with patients or those to whom they provide help.
Police officers and fire fighters for example experience a great deal of stress due to the fact that they must deal with life and death situations. A recent news report
unfortunately claims that some of these helpers had become so involved with those they were comforting that they ended up leaving their own wives for 9/11 widows. While perhaps these
individuals were not burned out, one can see how someone in a helping profession can step over ordinary boundaries and care too much. The same thing occurs in nursing and
social work. One study reveals that nurses are frustrated and burnt out due to the nursing shortage, increasing patient loads, a declining quality of patient care as well as abuse
