who is seeking power and why? The premise of the book is that the human race will be extinct in a generation, since no more children are being born. That
makes the quest for power somewhat pointless-the leader of society will simply be presiding over its end. Nevertheless, the one character in the book who seems to desire power most
is Xan. It is he who declares himself "Warden" of England, and institutes a police state (James, 1992). At one point, Xan asks Theo if he has ever known anyone
to give up real power, perhaps indicating that its not so much the search for power but keeping it that drives him. The coronation ring is a ring passed down
through the monarchy; each new king or queen wears it. Xan certainly doesnt deserve to wear it, since he not royalty but a usurper who seized power (James, 1992). Theos
situation is less clear. On one hand, it is he who kills Xan to protect the life of a newborn child but on the other, there is no guarantee he
wont become the same sort of tyrant as Xan, once he takes power. Its probably safe to say he shouldnt have the ring either. Theo and Julian: Their relationship is
very different in the film than it is in the book, so it depends on which one is under discussion. In the book, Theo and Julian have no prior relationship
until he meets her as a member of the resistance group; in the film they are divorced. If we are considering the book, then their relationship will depend on how
Theo develops as ruler. Theos feelings toward Julian seem ambivalent at first, until she convinces him she is pregnant, then he becomes extremely protective. How that will affect their relationship
