of a better quality when one man does one thing which is natural to him and does it at the right time" (Plato 370d). Socrates goes on to describe
a "simple" city, in which each person produces according to their ability and receives according to their needs. The inhabitants of this city live in harmonious balance by living moderately,
each taking only what is needed. There is no need for war, domination, or avarice when everyone lives simply and within the capabilities of their society. It is the demand
for superfluous things that results in greedy ambition and competition for resources. 2. Comparing the self-destruction of the simple city through the loss of moderation with Easter Islands
self-destruction. Socrates proposes many people in the simple city would not be satisfied forever with a simple way of life (Plato 373a). As they begin to add luxurious items,
such as sofas and other furniture, dainties, perfumes, incense, courtesans and cakes, they will venture far from the necessities of house, clothes, and food. Theyll desire arts and beautiful things
made from gold and ivory, all of which must be procured. This will cause them to enlarge their borders, as the original healthy State will no longer be deemed sufficient.
