First established as a fort in 1535 by the French explorer Jacques Cartier, Quebec City is among the oldest European settlements in North America. The city
itself was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain. Today Quebec City has the second largest population in the province of Quebec.
Quebec City is somewhat distinctive within the larger Canadian culture which has been greatly shaped not just by one European influence but two (Reid and Lacoursiere). One consequence
is that many Canadians are bilingual. They are conversant in both English and French. This is certainly the case in Montreal, Quebecs largest city. In Quebec City,
however, the people speak primarily French. They reflect a number of other more subtle cultural characteristics as well. The history of Canada
has resulted in two distinct populaces: the French Canadians and those which reflect more of the English culture. French Canadians constitute the majority in Quebec City. From the
beginning of Canadas colonial history the French diligently tried to instill Catholic and French values upon the country. This was particularly true in Quebec City and the impacts of
