Klimenko, Bolyai, Applewhite and Weiner (2009) conducted a quantitative analysis of the use of acupuncture during labor and delivery in the United States. These researchers sought to
determine the impacts of acupuncture alongside standards methods of care and identified specific desirable endpoints related to the use of acupuncture in order to determine whether specific differences were noted
when acupuncture was added to traditional care methods. The researchers began by relating a number of existing studies that suggested distinct
hormonal and histological impacts of the use of acupuncture on the uterus in both human and animal subject populations. The authors created a comprehensive introduction by relating studies that
showed the acupuncture could reduce the need for epidural analgesia, parenteral pain medications and oxytocin during labor and delivery, all of which were related to the capacity to increase patient
relaxation and reduce pain sensation. All of these research studies, though, were conducted in other countries, and so the question was raised about the applicability of this kind of
