By virtue of the circumstances of his birth Quanah Parker was a man that straddled two worlds. Born to Cynthia Ann Parker, a white captive of the Comanche, and Comanche war chief Peta Nocona in the mid-nineteenth century, Quanah Parker was what was known in his day as a half-breed. While that was a definite disadvantage in some respects, in other respects it greatly benefited this child of the Comanche. Unlike his full-blood Comanche brothers, Quanah knew some of the ways of the white people with which his people were coming into more and more frequent contact. That knowledge gained him many friends but it also gained him many enemies. The child Quanah, of course, would grow into the man Quanah and with his maturation he assumed many adult responsibilities. Ultimately he became a much-respected leader of one band of the Comanche. He proved that he was able to take the best attributes of the world of his mother and the world of his father and to blend those attributes not just to his advantage but to the advantage of the Comanche. Quanah grew up a Comanche warrior. Even then, however, he knew of the world of the whites and some of its curiosities and idiosyncrasies. After first waging war against whites in retaliation for their many indiscretions, indiscretions that included the death of his parents and younger sister, Quanah ultimately began to travel what in a Native Americans eyes was the "white mans road".
