as Quality of Work Life (QWL). The following paper examines QWL and Saturn. Quality of Work Life The notion of "quality
of work life or QW" was actually a phrase coined it seems by Irving Bluestone, the "head of the General Motors department of the United Auto Workers union in 1970"
(Feuer, 1989). He apparently defined the notion as something that created combined efforts of both management and labor, aimed at making work life better (Feuer, 1989). In light of this
it comes as no surprise that Saturn is essentially a product of this idea as related to GM. In relationship to the
aspects of this concept that Saturn appears to demonstrate it is perhaps important to understand some of the tenets of QWL. Two authors note that an organization or company must
realize that organizations are systems and that in order to achieve a high level of performance the organization must be changed (Schneider, Stepp, 2008). This was clearly done with Saturn
in relationship to its creation, which was a way of creating a whole new system of organization. QWL also involves believing that
the people in an organization are critical in the pursuit of high performance (Schneider, Stepp, 2008). These authors indicate that "This fully integrated automobile manufacturing facility, which employs 7,000 people,
encompasses most of the elements of such perspectives (Schneider, Stepp, 2008). They also indicate that another element involves treating customers incredibly well, understanding they are crucial to a companys success
