the airways, which is associated with allergic reactions that result in bronchial restriction. While these two respiratory ailments can affect people of any age group, they are particularly debilitating and
cause increases in mortality among the elderly. Recent statistics indicate that COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the US. The purpose of this investigation of COPD and
asthma is to address the impact of three factors, specifically dyspnea; family caregiving and quality of life, and develop nursing interventions that are appropriate to these factors within the context
of an elderly patient population. PATIENT POPULAITON According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COPD affects 65 million people globally, causing more than 3 million deaths in 2005. The
prevalence of asthma is even more devastating, as WHO indicates that 235 million people worldwide suffer from asthma. During an asthma attack, the lining in the bronchial tubes reacts to
allergens by swelling, which narrows the flow of air both into and out of the lungs (WHO, 2011a). These attacks greatly affect sleep and quality of life. Although fatality rates
due to asthma are relatively low, it is possible to die from the disease if the bronchial tree swells to the point where air flow is completely restricted. The
primary symptoms of COPD are "wheezing, cough, dyspnea on exertion and increased phlegm production" (Touhy and Jett, 2012, p. 289). Additional symptoms and effects include fatigue, weight loss and sleep
disorders, which collective generate psychological effects that also have a negative effect on the patients quality of life. Fluctuations in the condition from one day to the next, as well
