of cooperation and conflict. Candidates are assessed on their ability to collect and analyse evidence, and to base their conclusions on such evidence, as well as reflecting on their personal
experiences of the world and their social environment. They are expected to show knowledge of social structures, processes and issues, including social institutions such as the family, and processes of
social interaction and social inequalities. They are also expected to demonstrate certain skills in acquiring and analysing information; they must collect and interpret data and use it in order to
construct their own arguments and form their own conclusions. There are various recommendations which are made to ensure that the course meets the learners
needs, and that teachers are fulfilling the course requirements. For example, the AQA emphasises that "teachers are encouraged to stress the connections within social life and to examine the links
between various kinds of social relations" (AQA, 2005, 18) in order to demonstrate that social relations and processes do not take place in isolation from one another, but are interconnected.
The sociological concepts which are explored in the course should, therefore, show how both structure and process can elucidate patterns of social life. Teachers are to adopt a cross-cultural perspective
in their analyses and examples. It is strongly emphasised that the course is not based on a purely transmissionist model of education; it is
