Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 7 page paper looks at how quality engineering can take place with the use of the Six Sigma tool. The paper uses the example of a company manufacturing MP3 players with a power problem and uses the 6 Sigma tool to show how it can be applied to identify and qualify the problems and help lead to a resolution. that the product may be failing. We will assume that there is a company making MP3 players and that in recent months there has been an increased level of returns
due to power problems. The way this problem can be considered is with the use of a framework of model to help with the identification and the development of a
resolution. In this paper we will look at the Six Sigma model to use as an example. The Six Sigma It is
a total quality management (TQM) tool that is being adopted by major companies as a way of improving their operations (Gross, 2001). Companies that are utilising this tool in their
desire to create greater levels of excellence and value in the value chain include companies as diverse as General Electric, Motorola and even BP Chemicals (Hahn et al, 2001, Breyfogle
et al, 2001). With these major companies adopting this tool there is the justification of further examination of the way that it works and the throes that underlie its use
in order to better comprehend the system for application in other commercial and non-commercial situations. All of these companies have one factor in common, when implementing it, it was undertaken
with commitment throughout the organisation to quality, and a desire the change. Therefore using this model has to be with a commitment to using it to improve quality.
Six Sigma is a tool that makes use of statistical analysis, which is then applied to practical application. For this reason there has
been a lower level of attention in the business press than in the mathematical and engineering press (Breyfogle et al, 2001). The methodology takes the use of statistics and applies
