are more likely to demonstrate reserve and repressed personality characteristics that often result fewer social interactions. Prescribed normative behaviors based on the type of environment, whether informal social situations
or more formal ones, can also influence the roles that individuals play at different points in the lifespan. The following comparisons of different social groups in formal and informal
settings demonstrate the nature of age-based differences. Informal Settings Two informal settings were selected for observation of youth-30 population and elderly populations: a dance club primarily attended by
individuals aged 30 and under, and a dance club that caters to older populations. The youth site was determined by asking populations in their 20s about the best dance
clubs in the area; the older adult site was selected after requesting information about dance opportunities for the elderly and locating a dance organization that provides both instruction and events
for people over 60. The observation of the younger population revealed a level of social interaction and social grouping that appeared based on physical appearance. In the
night club, there were approximately 200 people, including a large group of people dancing for most of the night, a group that spent their evening at the bar, and a
group that appeared marginalized, and spent their time on the outside ring of the dance floor watching the others. For a portion of the two hour observation period, I
observed subjects from each of these three grouping and identified specific behaviors related to participation in the groups, as well as transition from one group to another. One
