is the most common cancer for women in the United States, and though survival rates are high, there is a distinct difference in survival rates for Caucasian women and African
American women (Phillips, Cohen and Tarzian, 2001). The increasing number of women diagnosed with this disease has resulted in a number of studies of the most effective treatment plans
as well as possible presentation treatments that can reduce the chances of the onset of cancer in high risk groups, including African American women. The research article by Phillips, Cohen
and Tarzian (2001) entitled: African American Womens Experiences with Breast Cancer Screening, outlines some of the basic differences in perceptions of breast cancer screening and access to screening that
may help to define the nature of this problem. This research study relates the potential for change by addressing some of the central problems in the way breast cancer
screening is perceived by African American women. Research Question/Objectives/Hypothesis The research question posed in this study is: What are the specific descriptors used to outline
actual experiences of African American women about engaging in Breast Self-Examination (BSE), mammography, and Professional Breast Examination (PBE) in an effort to gain better understanding as to the factors that
prevent women from participating. The purpose of this study is to determine whether African American womens perceptions of BSE, PBE and/or mammography play a critical role in access to
early detection, one of the greatest determinants of long-term survival for breast cancer patients. The independent variables for the study were participation in BSE, PBE or mammography (described in
