data that is collected, while qualitative research designs depend on the "qualities," on a comparative assessment through the use of descriptions, reports and interpretations of events. While medical research
often focuses on the use of quantitative approaches, qualitative reasoning can provide some distinct and important views that can have a positive impact on medical decision-making (Qualitative Reasoning). There are
three things that I would like to gain professionally from a closer understanding of qualitative reasoning by taking a Qualitative Reasoning course. These include: 1. qualitative research strategies
and their application; 2. the use of computer models as a means of integrating qualitative reasoning; and 3. an understanding of the impacts of external factors, including variations
in process, on the application of research in healthcare. I believe that areas of study will benefit me in terms of my development as a research professional and in
the area of health/medicine in general (Greenhalgh, 1997). In addition, I believe that a closer understanding of issues like bias in research methodologies (addressed within the scope of qualitative
methods) can give me the necessary tools to critique my personal perspectives and develop an ethical view. A variety of researchers have shown the value of the use
of qualitative designs in the assessment of best practice methods in healthcare. Blewitt and Jones, in their 1996 research study entitled Using Elements of the Nursing Minimum Data Set
for Determining Outcomes, applied an exploratory-descriptive, qualitative design created to assess methods for identifying patient conditions, services and end results as a part of care delivery. The researchers maintain
the value of the development of a NANDA-based Nursing Minimum Data Set (NMDS) in identifying the need for nursing services and creating a continuous process through which healthcare outcomes can
