justice system. This paper describes how judges are selected, and what qualifications a person must have to become a judge. Discussion There is no "one-size-fits-all" selection process for judges. Some
are appointed, some are elected, and it depends entirely on the state or jurisdiction as to what process is used. Lets look at California for our example; the search phrase
used is "how are judges selected for California Superior Courts" and the search engine is Google. Substituting any other state will bring up information for that location, so the student
can compare other venues if he wishes. The California information comes from the League of Women Voters, a reliable source. There are two types of state courts, trial and appellate;
trial courts, hear the case and reach a verdict "based on the evidence and ... understanding of the law that applies" (Askham, 1997). The case may be heard by a
single judge or by a judge and jury (Askham, 1997). If the case is appealed, it then goes to the appellate court, which, contrary to the common belief, does not
retry the case; instead, a "panel of judges" listens to the arguments of opposing counsel and determines if the lower court made errors that are serious enough to overturn the
original verdict (Askham, 1997). Municipal courts "handle all arraignments and preliminary hearings for criminal cases and try all misdemeanor cases" (Askham, 1997). Felony cases are tried in Superior Court
(Askham, 1997). There is also a monetary distinction between the two: cases in which damages are less than $25,000 go to Municipal Court; over that, they are tried in Superior
Court (Askham, 1997). In addition to these local courts, California has a state supreme court comprised of seven judges (Askham, 1997). In order to qualify for a judgeship, "a person
