completing the square and using a formula. The last two are the most commonly used. When using the method of completing the square there is an aim of changing the equation to one that can be solved more easily transforming the equation into a squared polynomial of linear order from its original quadratic polynomial in a variable in the equation. This simplifies the equation making it easer to solve. The process used to do this is straightforward, that first step is to move the constant from the right hand side of the equation to the left hand side. The next stage is to change the equation on the left hand side. Divide the left hand side by x, then divide the x term by two (halving it) and square it, and add it to both sides of the equation. Now the left hand side can be converted to the squared for of the statement and the right hand side can be simplified. After this both sides need to be square rooted, making sure that the ? is included in the right hand side. Now x can be solved. The quadratic formula approach is derived from then competing the squares method, the general equation is . This can be used for all of the quadratic equation and is using that same approach, but this time there is the ability to simply apply a formula that achieves the same ends. The stages at solving these are shown below; Completing the square x? + 8x - 2 = 0 x? + 8x + 16 - 2 - 16 = 0 (x + 4)? - 18 = 0 (x + 4)? - 18 ...
