In truth, there are as many countries in the Middle East that arent quite so radical in terms of government or propaganda -- and even more recently, its media reflects that fact. One of those countries is Qatar. But the question we need to ask here is, how much is the Qatari media giving its people propaganda, versus true news? How much control does the government have over the media? And how does this impact diplomacy with other countries, both the neighbors and in the West? Before answering these questions, it would first be helpful to provide an overview of Qatar. Qatar is an interesting country -- though its located in the Middle East, the country itself isnt a tyranny, though this has come about just recently, with the coming to the throne of the current emir and ruler. Located on the Persian Gulf and bordering Saudi Arabia, Qatar is best known for its oil and gas reserves, as well as an emir (ruler) who is somewhat open minded (CIA Fact Book, 2002). Also, with English as its second language (Arabic is the official language in Qatar), most people consider that this is one of the Middle Eastern countries that is actually open to a dialogue with the U.S. In terms of its media, Qatar boasts 12 radio stations (six with A.M. signals, 5 with F.M. signals, one shortwave), and as of 1977, 256,000 people in the country owned radios (CIA Fact Book, 2002).
