The "Pyramid Power" concept of IT integration with organizational needs was developed by Mary Silva Doctor and Richard Swanborg, Jr., of Omega Point Consulting. It is
similar to Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, in which the individual moves upward through five levels on his way to achieving self-actualization. As the individual begins with the most basic
of needs in Maslows hierarchy, so does the IT organization begin at the bottom of the IT pyramid by meeting the most basic of needs of the organization it serves.
"Pyramid Power" was developed by Mary Silva Doctor and Richard Swanborg, Jr. in the mid-1990s. Developer Mary Silva Doctor is a senior
consultant for Omega Point Consulting in Pennsylvania; co-developer Richard Swanborg, Jr. is a consultant for Icex Inc. Both consultancies specialize in IT development and assist organizations in bringing their
IT organizations to the point of being able to add - and then create - value for the larger organization. Doctor and Swanborgs "Pyramid Power" has value in that
it provides a framework in which IT organizations can plan for the future. It allows the IT organization to formulate and then begin to implement concrete and definite strategies
for creating value for the larger organization, providing a "map" of precisely where the organization needs to be going next. Carol Hildebrand (1997)
is the managing partner of Omega Point Consulting, and explains the need for the pyramid in CIO Magazine. Ultimately, the purpose of the pyramid is to assist organizations to
