this play carries on in the romantic tradition of Shakespeare. Discussion In order to answer that question, we need to first consider what we mean when we discuss Shakespearean romances.
The plays that fit that category are few: The Riverside Shakespeare, a wonderful volume of the complete works, lists only five of his plays as romances: Pericles, Prince of Tyre,
Cymbeline, The Winters Tale, The Tempest, and The Two Noble Kinsmen. Of these, only The Tempest is performed with any regularity; The Winters Tale and Cymbeline appear occasionally and the
others hardly at all. Lets use The Tempest as our model of a romance of this period, since it really does fit the category beautifully. What does it consist of?
Theres a beautiful island, ruled over by a sorcerer, Prospero who lives there in solitude with his beautiful daughter Miranda. Prospero was once Duke of Milan but his brother Antonio
usurped his title and set him and his daughter adrift; they sailed until they came to the island. Prospero is therefore a nobleman, royalty, who has been greatly wronged. He
is served by an earthy, half-demon by the name of Caliban and a sprite named Ariel. In the course of the play, we learn that Prospero enslaved Caliban because the
latter tried to make love to Miranda; Ariel is a slave because Prospero saved him from a tree where he was trapped for twelve years, and his service is the
