to find any belief system you can imagine, somewhere in the world. With that in mind, I set out to create a religion Id like to believe in, even though its extremely unusual. The Tenets of Purrfectionism Purrfectionism had its beginnings very recently, when a scholar named Melissa Hibert (not her real name) realized that, for many people, organized religion is profoundly unsatisfying and irrelevant in their lives. She reflected that most people, if they had the choice, would like, first of all, to have a stable home of their own. (Wealth, power and other indicators of economic success are irrelevant to this discussion, in which we are concentrating on spiritual values.) With that in place they would seek to bring comfort to others, give them joy and beauty, and yet encourage them to remain independent and thoughtful. The idea seemed to come from inside, Hibert relates, and as she thought and meditated, it seemed to her that she had a revelation: all these qualities (stability, tranquility, beauty, joy, independence and comfort) were centered in one Being. But this being, she saw, was not the paternalistic and often sexist figure of God the Father, nor was it the sometimes blatantly sexual Goddess; it was a beautiful, graceful and loving Cat. Hibert was inspired to create the religion now called Purrfectionism. Purrfectionism is a gentle faith based on the idea that human beings can think for themselves, and are thus in no need of a God who threatens them ("Obey the Commandments or go to Hell!"); or bribes them ("Be good in this life and youll be rewarded in the next").
