Albert Camus there are two lead characters; Gregor and Mersault who are both suffering from the human condition, having to cope with events and tasks they do not want to
undertaken which is creating unhappiness. In both cases event change their lives, enforcing a form of imprisonment which may be interpreted as a type of purgatory which may be interpreted
as a rejection by society, but for the characters it may also be interpreted as a form of liberation for the characters. In Kafks Metamorphosis the main character is
transformed into a giant insect right at the beginning of the book (Kafka, 1996). Gergor, the main character is the sole breadwinner of his family. Gregor has a job working
as a travelling salesman; his employer is the man whom his father owes a large debt. Gregor is proud of the way he has been able to look after his
family, but he was not happy in his job. As a travelling salesman Gregor is used to waking up in unusual surroundings and facing different circumstances (Kafka, 1996). The
main event of the book is his change into an insect (Kafka, 1996). It may be argued that the most surprising fact about Gregors change is the way he accepts
it without question. The reminder of the book deals wit the consequences of his transformation. As a giant bug Gregor is unable to communicate with his family, they also appear
to be able to accept that he is the bug (Kafka, 1996). The changes places Gregor is a type of purgatory; his family start out trying to look after
