always the case. The following paper provides a summary and reaction to the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906
"The Pure Food and Drug Act of June 30, 1906 is a United States federal law that provided for federal inspection of meat products,
and forbade the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated food products or poisonous patent medicines" (Wikipedia, 2006). The act came from various concerns, not the least of which was a
novel by Upton Sinclair called The Jungle. Interestingly enough Sinclair wrote a book about families who worked in a meat plant in order to get readers to side with the
notion of socialism. However, the book frightened people and disgusted them for much of his research was hands on and his work indicated that in meat plants poisons for rats,
rat droppings, parts from workers who were hurt, and almost anything imaginable, went into the meat people were eating. This led to investigations, instigated by President Roosevelt himself, and then
this particular act. "As is common of laws regulating business, the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was as much an attempt by businesses to improve revenue as
it was the product of a public outcry against fraudulent practices" (Wikipedia, 2006). Interestingly enough Coca-Cola backed the act although it had cocaine in its drink. Cocaine was legal but
