criminal justice system should dole out punishment for particular crimes. Some contend that increased levels of punishment do little to deter crime. Others, however, contend that just the opposite is the case. Proponents of more severe punishment contend that simple measures such as increasing the amount of time that a criminal will have to serve in prison for crimes involving weapons, for example, emphasize that research demonstrates that the very existence of such stepped up measures will reduce the incidence of such crimes. Criminals, of course, must be deterred from their criminal actions. Just how to accomplish that, however, is a highly controversial topic. To consider this topic from an ethical perspective we must consider what is best for society over all. To devise the most appropriate intervention, however, we also have to consider the question of what causes certain individuals to commit crimes. Then we can figure out how to best intercede in the process. When we do so it will become clearer that punishment is one of the best means we have of reducing criminal activity. Criminologists, sociologists, and even psychologists often agree that specific factors in the lives of an individual determine their propensity to commit a crime. Five particularly important theories regarding this propensity are: 1)Rational Choice, 2)Routine Activities, 3)General Deterrence, 4)Specific Deterrence, 5)Incapacitation.
