world. They arrived in flocks of thousands and came motivated to work for low wages, prepared to live impoverished lifestyles, and to pursue a dream overflowing with grand ideas
of liberty and genuine freedom. Of the many things that these adventurers all had in common, one was that they each spent their first American years living
within the young countrys urban cities. And while more recent decades have ushered many of their descendants into the more distant suburbs, large groups of key ethnicities still remain
primarily within the city limits of the same regions to which their ascendants came. Among these groups are the Puerto Ricans; who began the heaviest era of their migration
more than three-quarters of a century ago when the island from which they came went through a political transition into a bonafide territorial possession of the United States. (Cardona 14;
Piore 22). A cursory examination of the average large American city in 1996 reveals that the urban core is generally subject to decay, poverty, and a
poor reputation. In barely twenty years, the population of New York City fell from over eight million to just a bit more than seven million people (Como-Diaz 15). And yet
as I write, the inner-city Puerto Rican population continues to grow. So why would a group of people who spent more than 80 years within the walls of skyscrapers and
the filth of urban streets want to remain there? The answer, with specific respect to the Puerto Rican people, is an historically transitory one. As this essay shall demonstrate,
