By 1925, public health leaders like C.E.A. Winslow claimed that there is a greater increase in life expectancy and that when tactics are implemented, longevity does improve (Turnock, 2004). The author looks back a century and concludes that in 2003, there were fewer cases of disease that were once deadly such as measles, and he credits public health practice to this fortunate turn of events (Turnock, 2004). Indeed, immunization programs are for example a part of public health practice. The idea of public health is that the entire public is considered. When a flu epidemic hits, the research goes across borders and throughout the world. And while this is the case and that public health advocates must look at the big picture in respect to epidemiology, community health practices are also relevant. Community and public health practice are very much aligned. Community health nursing for example evolved from public health nursing (Lundy & Janes, 2003). Community health nursing is a discipline where the health care community is responsible for meeting the needs of the people who live in the community (Lundy & Janes, 2003). The professionals respond to changing community needs, such as when new diseases like AIDS arise (Lundy & Janes, 2003). Community health systems are attached to social trends, economics, health care, and culture (Lundy & Janes, 2003). Yet, they reflect the needs of a specific community. Culture must be taken into account. For example, if a community has a higher than average number of HIV victims, and the residents are from a culture where machismo reigns and condoms are looked at in a negative light, the community health advocates must find a way to get through to the people.
