its true that public speaking remains a very frightening prospect for many people. Weve all seen the results: a speaker who faces the audience as if it were a firing squad; who loses his place, mumbles inaudibly, and almost runs from the stage when its over. It doesnt have to be like this. In their book Public Speaking Susan and Steven Beebe give a guide not only to giving, but to enjoying, public speaking. Discussion The book is unusual in several respects. First, its interactive; there is a "companion website" to the book here: http://cwabacon.pearsoned.com/bookbind/pubbooks/beebe_ab/. The website provides study guides and review questions to enhance the experience of using the book. But its also unusual for the way in which the Beebes discuss their subject. Rather than launching into a "how to" discourse, they first tell readers why its important to learn to speak well, and what it can mean to a persons future to have this ability. They reveal, among other things, that the one skill potential employers value most in college graduates is their ability to communicate effectively using the spoken word. The first six chapters of the book are particularly valuable because the consider speechmaking as a process, and discuss why we make speeches in the first place, rather than getting right to the "nuts and bolts" of writing. By setting speeches within the context of the larger pictures of how they can be used (company presentations, social occasions, classes, etc.) the authors de-mystify speeches and make them approachable, something anyone can do, and do easily and well.
