PUBLIC SERVICE DEFINED Public service is the epitome of how each human on the planet is expected to contribute to the tenets of social responsibility. Understanding the essential American Way as a barometer of public service reflects a cultural quest as vast and varied as the number of identities that help to comprise one of the worlds most ethnically diverse nations. To say the primary attributes include individualism, materialism, capitalism, questionable social conscience and an unquenchable desire to be the best is to accurately describe the essential American Way; as such, those who live and die in the United States are often thought to shortchange their civic duties when it comes to acknowledging their social responsibility. According to Althen et al (2002), individualism is one of the most prominent characteristics of the essential American Way, reflecting a combination of good and bad impressions for those just getting to know the countrys character. To be unique within a world of sameness is a quest sought by many people and industries alike; however, Althen et al (2002) note how it is by way of such an objective that one becomes labeled as selfish and intolerant.
