Our awareness of the discipline of public relations and the definitions that we have formulated to describe it have changed considerably over time. In
reality the term and the formal discipline are relatively new. In existence for only a hundred or so years, the discipline of public relations has become the backbone of
organizational structure (Public Relations Society of America, 2006). Despite its relatively short life, there are almost as many definitions for public relations
as their are entities that incorporate the discipline into their organizational structure. The Public Relations Society of America, however, provides one of the more succinct definitions. According to
that definition, public relations: "helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other"
In actuality this definition reflect components of many other definitions. In some ways the
official definition of the Public Relations Society of America is more limiting than other definitions but in most ways it is more encompassing.
In the formal definition of "public relations" provided by the Public Relations Society of America, the term "organization", for example is substituted for more commonly used terms such
as "company" and "business" (Public Relations Society of America, 2006). This allows more latitude in regard to the types of entities that utilize public relations. In a medical
environment, in comparison, the organization might be referred to as a "provider". In the political environment it might be referred to as a "campaign" or an "administration".
