Pathogenic organisms have the potential to radically alter human life. Human beings, like all animals, are both directly and indirectly
impacted by the ravages of disease. Public health balances on the decisions that we make and the steps we take to deal with diseases. The purpose of this
paper is to explore the concept of diseases, their mechanism of infection, and the types of public health decisions measures that are taken to combat them.
There are any number of pathogenic organism that would make an excellent example of how diseases can impact human beings and how we implement public health measures
to guard against those impacts. Consider, for example, bird flu. Bird flu is technically known as H5N1 (a strain that has mutated to the point that it can
be passed from human to human). Just a few of years ago bird flu was a topic of much discussion and preparation because the world feared a pandemic of
epic proportions. With a mortality rate of 57%, avian flu has the potential to kill millions the world over (Selekman, 2007). In 2005 the World Health Organization estimated
