We have much to be thankful for in terms of public health. Americans have witnessed phenomenal changes in the lengths and quality of their lives in the
last century thanks to public health. Our lifespans are some thirty years longer and infant mortality some ninety-five percent lower than they were at the turn of the twentieth
century (Turnock, 2004). With a continued emphasis on public health we can expect comparable gains in both the length and the quality of life in the next century.
As Turnock (2004, 1) notes: "the small victories of public health over the past century
have resulted in cumulative gains so vast in scope that they are difficult to comprehend"
The obvious question that arises is just what is public health? One of the more all-encompassing definitions would be that public health is the deliberate application of science to
the task of fortifying humans against disease, harmful environmental parameters, and congenital or accident related infirmities. Public health encompasses such diverse innovations as penicillin and automobile seat belts.
It encompasses the provisions that are used to insure a safe blood supply and to warn against the hazards of leaded paints in our environment. Public health, therefore, is
a very broad discipline and one that consists of a number of separate components. It is also an evolving discipline and one that has in actuality been around for
centuries. One of Turnocks (2004, 9) more succinct definitions is that public health is:
