A 12 page paper answering questions about the relationship between federal and local influences in public education, particularly as it relates to funding public schools. At the next local election, voters will be asked whether they support an increase in local property taxes. If the measure passes,
the full amount of the additional funds collected as a result of increased property taxes will be used only for the local public school system.
Voters historically say "no" to most tax increase initiatives, but we rarely deny tax increases when the recipients of the proceeds are our public schools. Certainly there
are many problems within the schools as they exist, but one thing is certain: better schools translate to better communities. Better education leads to more than only a
greater number of our children attending college and moving away to find good jobs. It can help keep them home, too. Employers
always have had more interest in employees with a solid basic education. As true as that has been in the past, it is critical now as long-term employment trends
include specialty knowledge, familiarity with technical knowledge, the ability to use and understand computers and a wealth of other skills beyond the basics. Even the basics are valued by
those offering service jobs in the local area - we all appreciate dealing with cashiers who are able to count out the right change. Employers need people who can
think well and effectively, and who can read a procedure manual when presented with an operational problem. In times past, those who saw
