Both Gap, Inc. and Ford Motor Company have been involved with long-term problems for which they found it necessary to make public statements. Gap starting gaining negative attention for contracting offshore manufacturing in sweatshop conditions in the early 1990s, and of course Ford was obliged to reassure customers and potential customers of the safety of the Ford Explorer, one of Detroits most successful nameplates. The purpose here is to compare the manner in which these companies approached their tasks. Gap Stories of sweatshops within the US arise occasionally, the one gaining the most notoriety has been those manufacturing clothing for Wal-Marts Kathie Lee line. Nearly all of Gaps manufacturing is offshore. The company first sourced manufacturing with Central America companies, but has since moved most of its manufacturing focus to the Far East. In 1996, the National Labor Committee sponsored a two-month speaking tour featuring young women formerly employed worker at the Korean-owned Mandarin International maquiladora factory in El Salvador, one of Gaps suppliers. The speakers were careful to say that customers such as Gap, Eddie Bauer and J.C. Penney were not directly at fault, and the message of the tour was that these customers should not withdraw their business, but rather force sweatshops to meet minimum standards (The GAP and sweatshop labor in El Salvador, 1996). This has been the route most often taken by the Gap.
