left and right wing status quo is so vast. However, it is not simply the policies put forth by the current crop of politicians that is controversial, but the entire
political landscape, in all its intricacies. For instance, there is contention not just over what policies would produce a stronger economy, but over matters more fundamental to the electoral process,
such as where should the financing of campaigns come from. Ever since the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Citizens United, corporations have had the right to donate limitless
funds to political candidates in an undisclosed fashion, leading to a state of affairs which many are likening to oligarchy. In that corporations and wealthy industrialists can obviously contribute significantly
more funds to candidates than the average citizen, it is argued that the wealthy have a disproportionate amount of representation in the current political process. However, on the other side
of the matter, there are those who claim that the financing of campaigns from private sources is an infinitely preferable state of affairs to the alternative of public campaign finance.
This point of contention is so central to the electoral process in the United States that it merits a great deal of attention and scrutiny. This paper will explore the
issue of campaign finance in the current political climate, using the San Francisco Mayoral race of 2011 as a key example. Through pointing out how public campaign financing has changed
San Francisco Board of Supervisor races and how it changed the 2011 race, one might have a better understanding of how it would change national politics, if adopted on that
scale. In order to carry out such an examination, it is necessary first and foremost to understand the events that transpired during the election in San Francisco in 2011.
