the challenge the clinician faces when prescribing an appropriate medication is a concern I share. You mentioned side-effects, including weight gain and tardive dyskinesia. Carroll, Nelson and Papakostas (2010) reported that as much as 8 percent of patients taking atypical antipsychotic drugs can experience the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. One study revealed that there was a 1.1 percent rate of dyskinesia with aripiprazole within the first six weeks. This was a population of depressed patients (Carroll, Nelson and Papakostas, 2010). Many patients are being given psychotropic medications off-label, i.e., for non-psychotic illnesses. Edersheim (2009) reported that clinicians need to take some steps to protect themselves when they do this. Suggestions include scientific support for the prescription and carefully monitor the patient (Edersheim, 2009). Since so many psychotropic drugs are prescribed for illnesses like depression, OCD and anxiety and they have been found to be effective, why can they not be approved for these other purposed by the FDA.
