explain that effective listening is about decoding the message and then reflecting back to the speaker what the listener believes the speaker means. The authors provide a common example of
a child who is angry with a parent because they have been told to do something. Instead of responding to the words, such as "I am not going to do
that!", the parent responds to the feelings, such as "I can tell that you are angry with me for ordering you to do this." Of the parent responds to the
words and says something like, Well, you have to do this!" it will only cause more anger and rebellious behaviors. Responding to the emotions allows this parent and teenager to
work towards a solution (Brew and Kottler, 2008). McNaughton et al. (2007) explain that active listening is a multi-step process. It consists of making empathic comments, such as
the one just described, asking questions that are appropriate, paraphrasing, and finally summarizing to assure understanding. The goal of active listening, according to these researchers, is to develop a clear
understanding of how the speaker feels and what the speakers concerns are while at the same time, letting the speaker know that the listener is genuinely interested in understanding the
message. Numerous research studies have validated the effectiveness of this communication strategy in many different helping professions (McNaughton et al., 2007). Paraphrasing is essential for person-centered therapy. Carl Rogers,
