many psychopharmacological options (Sternberg, Cole and DeBattista, 2010). Preston and Johnson, 2011) suggest that when positive results are not seen in the appropriate amount of time, the clinician needs to
re-evaluate. Benzodiazepines is the most commonly prescribed anxiolytic medications used to treat various anxiety-type disorders. Anticonvulsants, especially gabapentin and pregabalin, have also become popular for treating anxiety disorders. Another very
popular group of drugs are the SSRIs and the SNRIs in treating anxiety disorders (Sternberg, Cole and DeBattista, 2010; Davidson, Connor and Zhang, 2009). SSRIs have been especially useful with
panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (Davidson, Connor and Zhang, 2009). A large number of drugs have been found to be effective for treating social anxiety disorder. These include Beta
blockers such as oxprenolol and atenolol, and MAOIs, such as phenelzine. SSRIs are the most common drug to treat PTSD (Sternberg, Cole and DeBattista, 2010). SSRIs such as fluoxetine, have
had success in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder. The specific drug that is prescribed is determined by the specific symptoms (Davidson, Connor and Zhang, 2009). Davidson, Connor and Zhang (2009) point out
that benzodiazepines have been used since their introduction in the 1960s to treat both acute anxiety and chronic anxiety. Their effectiveness for short-term use of weeks or even months has
been established. There are concerns about long-term use, however (Davidson, Connor and Zhang, 2009). This means the clinician needs to be cautious about prescribing these drugs for maintenance in many
anxiety disorders such as GAD or even with PTSD. BIBLIOGRAPHY - WEEK 7, Discussion 1 American Psychiatric Association. (2000). Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. DSM-IV-TR. D.C.:
