the protagonist/antagonist of Robert Duvalls 1997 film, The Apostle. He represents the paradox of man in nature. He is motivated by primitive (and sinful) desires such as lust,
jealousy, and excessive ego, and allowed his natural passions to consume him to the point of killing another human being. But Sonny also has the need to transcend this
primitivism, and frame a world in which he is driven not by his own selfish devices, but by the greater good of a higher power. For Sonny, reinventing himself
becomes a quest not only to prevent him from descending into insanity, but is also a matter of survival. This powerful characterization of evangelical minister-turned-apostle illustrates the fundamentals of
Fromms personality theory, and how it can be practically applied to individuals while also offering deeper insights into their actions. Unlike his predecessors, Erich Fromm did not believe that the
human personality developed along predetermined stages. He felt that it was a process that evolved in accordance with how the individual sought to distinguish himself from nature. Although
