relationships are fascinating enough in a general sense. These relationships involve a number of aspects of our psychological function. When these relationships evolve to ones of intimacy, caring,
and love, however, the situation can become exceedingly complex from a psychological standpoint. Psychological research can allow us to understand both how intimate relationships are formed, maintained, and how
they end. This type of research provides a scientific view of the phenomena which throughout the centuries has largely stayed within the realm of philosophical thought.
The true nature of love is a topic which has been explored by philosophers since ancient times. Platos "Symposium" and Aristotles "Nicomachean Ethics", in particular,
offer relevant insight into this topic. In the "Symposium", Socrates reveals what he has been told of love by the wise woman Diotima. In "Nicomachean Ethics" Aristotle associates
the concept of love with friendship. While such philosophical insight has value in itself, only recently have we been allowed a more scientific view of the nature of love
and intimate relationships. We know, of course, that adult relationships are determined by a variety of factors. Many of these are cultural in nature but others involve our
individual behavior in the way that we deal with other people. These behaviors become even more complex when we are dealing with relationships in which one individual makes an
emotional commitment to another. Commitment is typically reflected in the social institution in marriage, the commitment of one individual to
