childs parents. When a parent is incarcerated, however, the child is thrown into any variety of caregiving situations, situations which could be either positive or negative for the child.
In the very best of cases the child achieves a close and positive relationship with his or her adult caregivers. Even in these situations, however, the child cannot
help but be negatively impacted to one degree or another by his or her parents incarceration. The degree to which a child will be affected by parental incarceration varies,
however, according to a number of factors. Parke and Clarke-Stewart (2002) emphasize that to make a determination of impact the "network of relationships within the family system" must be
considered. Factors such as the childs developmental level, the specific relationship that existed between the child and the incarcerated parent, and even the gender of both the incarcerated parent
and the child must be considered. Given that some 1.1 million parents were incarcerated in either federal, state, or local correctional facilities
in 2002 it is imperative that we try and determine just how the above factors determine the impact children feel as a result of parental incarceration. The specific interworkings
of a childs family is by far the most critical of these factors. The traditional concept of family, or more specifically the traditional American sociological model of the nuclear
