Manuals multi-axial system of classification. Personality disorders, in turn, fall on Axis 2 of the DSM-IV-TR. As might be expected, the biological, emotional, cognitive and behavioral components
of eating, substance abuse, sexual and gender identity disorders, and personality disorders vary significantly. Eating disorders are among the more interesting of Axis 1 disorders. Anorexia is one example
of such a disorder. Anorexia nervosa is one of several eating disorders that affect millions of people every year in the United States alone. An estimated 10,000,000 females
and 1,000,000 males suffer from either anorexia or bulimia every year (USA Today, 2006). Not surprisingly, two subtypes of anorexia are identified in the DSM IV-TR. These are
1. restricting and 2. binge eating-purging. These disorders often originate in prepuberty. Although considerable research has been invested towards doing so, the precise cause of Anorexia
nervosa has yet to be determined conclusively. Researchers generally agree, however, that anorexia involves negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional assumptions and core beliefs. Evans (2006, 37) notes, however, that
"The factors that serve to perpetuate an eating disorder may have little to do with why the illness is continuing". Interestingly, several structural and functional changes in the neurochemical
pathways of the brain occur with anorexia and these continue to reinforce the stimulation derived from the aberrant behavior even after treatment and recovery has ensued (Evans, 2006).
