each theory. Feminist Key concepts: A feminist approach to counseling can relate to several different, but related theories/therapies that all acknowledge that there is inequality in the societal distribution
of power, which privileges one gender over another, as well as shows preferences in regards to race, class, sexual orientation, etc. (Messina, 2008). This viewpoint focuses on empowering clients by
examining external societal forces that shape behavior, while identifying ways in which clients can learn to accept responsibility for lives within the context of explored values (Messina, 2008). Key concepts
in this mode of practice also include the idea that each client knows "what is best" in regards to that clients life and that the therapeutic process should be educational
in nature (Messina, 2008). Therapeutic process: Feminist counseling focuses on developing the power that clients have within themselves, while it simultaneously demystifies the client-counselor relationship, which establishes a collaborative, therapeutic
partnership in order to accomplish goals (Messina, 2008). In this relationship, the counselor suggests techniques, rather than specifying them, pointing out possible effects and the rationale for their use
(Messina, 2008). As this suggests the client is included within the process through the mean s of open dialogue, which establishes the "direction and goals of therapy" (Messina, 2008).
Applications: techniques and procedures: An appropriate application for feminist therapy would be to "help clients understand the impact of gender-role expectations in their lives," while providing clients with insight into
the ways social issues affect their problems" (Messina, 2008). A principal technique associated with feminist therapy is to give the client reading assignment that address such issues as "coping skills,
gender inequality, gender-role stereotypes, ways sexism is promoted, power differential between men and women and societys obsession with thinness" (Messina, 2008). Interventions include such tactics as self disclosure and assertiveness
