Raymond, an autistic savant that Charlie did not know existed until after his fathers death. Raymond has a high degree of functioning, in that he can communicate and handle the
personal tasks of daily living independently, but as an autistic person, the emotional and affect areas of his behavior are set. Therefore, from a psychological orientation, the person who changes,
who grows and adjusts to having a new person in his life is Charlie. Examination of this film and relevant psychological theory shows that through the adjustments that Charlie undergoes
in order to consider the needs of his brother, he grows as a person and this is the point of this Academy Award-winning film. In order to understand the
thesis presented in this discussion, which is that the psychological adjustment portrayed in the film should be viewed as largely that of Charlie, rather than Raymond, it is necessary to
understand what autism spectrum disorders involve. Giarelli, et al (2005) point out that a child with autism lacks the ability to establish social reciprocity. An autistic child may push people
away and show absolutely no emotional response to others, but lovingly stroke a humming electrical appliance for hours. Furthermore, a generation ago, it was a prevalent belief that autism was
caused by poor parenting. Having an older autistic sibling may have inhibited the Charlie and Raymonds father, as he may have believed that by not interacting with his son, he
was preventing the mistakes that he had been told caused Raymonds autism. The student researching this topic should note that this is supposition on the writer/tutors part, but it is
