acclaimed Shakespearean director Peter Brook in 1963; and again in 1990 by Harry Hook. This paper discusses some of the psychological themes presented in the film. Discussion The film follows
the novel very closely, which makes it a very disturbing work. The black and white photography robs the island of its feeling of being a tropical paradise, and instead presents
it as a place of menacing shadows. The underlying question that must drive all discussion of Goldings work is why? Why does a group of intelligent young men, presumably representative
of the best in British society, break down so quickly, and into such anarchy? How can boys raised in a system that is still painfully correct turn into such savages?
Tree of the boys are killed, after all; one dies in a fire but two others are murdered, and as the book comes to its climax Ralph is being hunted
to the death and only survives through the ironic device of an out-of-control fire that signals a passing ship. The answer must be that the boys break down because of
fear. They seem at first to have found an idyllic home: the island is beautiful, there is abundant fresh water, plenty of fruit and wild pigs. They have everything they
need to survive comfortably for years, and as they are the only humans on the island, they need not fear an attack from anyone else. But the peace lasts a
