acknowledges he remembers more when he is interested and his memory depends on the time of day. Mrs. Torres thinks Carlos is immature and starved for attention. He never
talks about his own experiences, instead, the stories he reports are from TV, movies and video games, thus, there is a concern he is not able to distinguish between reality
and fantasy. The primary reason for assessing Carlos is to determine his overall intellectual ability, his academic abilities, and his memory functioning. These are the areas of concern. The referral
question would be: Assess general intellectual capabilities, assess competencies in reading and mathematics; and assess memory processing. It should be stated that often something shows up during the testing process
that causes the psychologist to pursue something else that is relevant and important in terms of understanding a childs abilities. The logical setting for psychometric evaluation is in the educational
setting. The foster parents and the teachers need to know if Carlos has any learning disability that is impeding his academic progress. A referral would be made to the psychologist
by the teacher although legally, the parents can make this referral. In the educational setting, a psychologist would determine exactly which assessments to perform based on the reasons for the
referral (Growth-Marnat, 2009). As this author explains, the psychologist will first observe the child in different settings, such as in the classroom, on the playground, and in the cafeteria. The
