Americans seek treatment each year for dependence on the drug. Because it is not seen as a physically addictive substance, pot is usually considered to be psychologically addictive. Long term
cannabis users can in fact develop a psychological dependence and require more of the drug in order to achieve the same effect ("Growing," 1989). As with other recreational drugs,
marijuana has a decided short term psychological effect. The substance may impair short term memory and comprehension, as well as to alter sense of time ("Growing," 1989). Events may
appear to be happening in slow motion while a person is under the influence of the substance. Marijuana may also impede ones ability to perform tasks which require concentration
and coordination such as driving an automobile or operating heavy machinery ("Growing," 1989). Another psychological effect is the influence on ones motivation and cognition; these states may be altered (1989).
For example, a student who was formerly doing well may be less motivated to obtain straight As after repeated abuse of the substance. Other effects of the drug include difficulty
concentrating; it is also known that pot makes learning new information difficult ("Growing," 1989). Marijuana, like some other drugs, can invoke paranoia and psychosis (1989). While these latter effects appear
severe, they are only likely to occur in some individuals who are prone to the psychological consequence. While there are many negative psychological ramifications, the substance produces a pleasant, relaxing
