they might ask a patient, based on their backgrounds. Discussion The patient is seeking help for a problem described thus: he or she performs behaviors or has thought processes that
cause distress. It isnt any more specific, nor does it need to be. Something the person is doing or thinking is upsetting them to the point that it is interfering
with their lives, and they have sought help. The first professional is Dr. Albert, who is a counseling psychologist who uses a behaviorist approach. Behaviorism is defined as a
"theory of ... human learning that only focuses on objectively observable behaviors and discounts mental activities" (Behaviorism, 2001). Behaviorism studies the stimulus-response pairing; the classic in the field is Pavlovs
experiment with dogs. Dr. Albert is will focus on the patients behavior. Three questions this psychologist might ask are, "Why do you think this/do this?" "What is happening in the
environment at the time you have this thought/perform this action?" "What reward do you obtain for thinking like this/doing this?" He would ask these questions because he is trying
to find out if the patient has any understanding as to why his behavior makes him uneasy; even more importantly, he is trying to connect the persons distress to his
environment. The question about reward may seem odd, but if a person is an attention-seeker, even negative attention, such as he might get for discussing his feelings, is attention. Dr.
Gluck is a humanist; humanism "is guided by a conviction that intentionality and ethical values are strong psychological forces, among the basic determinants of human behavior" (Humanistic psychology overview, 2001).
