A life transition is confusing, especially one that has happened suddenly (Bradley, 2001). Losing ones job is said to be "one of the most devastating crises that an individual
can experience" (Whalen, Nurse and Steele, 2006). It is a traumatic life experience (Paulin, 2006). It is a life transition that is sudden, unplanned for and that brings strong emotional
and psychological effects (Whalen, Nurse and Steele, 2006). The crisis of job loss is comparable to death and divorce, it brings a multitude of feelings (Whalen, Nurse and Steele,
2006; Paulin, 2006). The emotions reported by persons who have lost their job include shock, anger, fear, sadness, disillusionment, disappointment and betrayal (Paulin, 2006). People report they felt like the
"bottom just dropped out of my world completely" or they felt "shaken and just totally disorientated" (Paulin, 2006). What they believed about "work and "working relationships" (Paulin, 2006) did not
seem to be true (Paulin, 2006). Some people have ambivalent feelings when they lose their job (Paulin, 2006). On the one hand, they feel fear, rejection, and anger but on
the other hand, they feel regenerated, liberated and excited (Paulin, 2006). Almost all feel a sense of loss, though (Paulin, 2006). While the emotional and psychological responses to job
loss are not consistent across all individuals, very strong emotions are felt by all (Paulin, 2006). It doesnt matter if the person lost their job because of downsizing, the person
still feels as though they have been fired (Whalen, Nurse and Steele, 2006). That feeling has a direct effect on their self-confidence, self-esteem and feelings of self-worth (Whalen, Nurse and
