of shock. That is well known. What is perhaps not as well known is that shock can be serious and can even be a killer. It exacerbates already serious conditions
and can create new concerns. Shock is said to manifest in an individual whenever both the heart and the blood vessels do not provide a fair supply of oxygen-rich blood
to vital organs ("Treating," 2004). Studies have revealed that with most every illness or injury there is some degree of shock ("Treating," 2004). It is natural. At the same
time, shock is potentially life-threatening, and when untreated or erroneously treated, can cause death (2004). The idea that someone is "just in shock" is somewhat of a contradiction as
such an attitude does not consider the importance of treating shock properly. First, it is important to note that there are different varieties of shock. Shock will manifest in
a variety of ways and there are four general types which are: "hypovolemic, neurogenic, psychogenic and anaphylactic" ("Treating," 2004). Each type of shock comes about during different circumstances which result
from different effects on the body (2004). Psychogenic shock will generally follow a sudden frightening event such as bad news or what accompanies significant pain ("Shock," 2004). From the
loss of a loved one to a car accident to the discovery that ones spouse is leaving them all of a sudden are life events that can lead to shock.
While psychogenic shock will typically manifest with any sudden tragedy or event that is "shocking" it is something to be taken seriously. This type of shock is technically "caused by
a sudden dilation of the blood vessels which causes blood flow to the brain to be momentarily interrupted" ("Psychogenic Shock," 2004). While psychological, and psychosomatic perhaps, psychogenic shock is very
